St. Patricks Day

> The definition of the English word tradition comes from Latin " traditio", the noun from the verb traderere or tradere( to transmit,to hand over,to give for safekeeping); it was originally used in Roman Law to refer to the concept of legal transfers and inheritance .According to Wikipedia ,the concept includes a number of interrelated ideas;the unifying one is that tradition refers to beliefs, objects or customs performed or believed in the past, originating in it,transmitted through time by being taught by one generation to the next, and are performed or believed in the present.

>

>

> St.Patrick lived in the fifth century,is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. He is credited for bringing Christianity to Ireland. In the centuries following his death, believed to have been on March 17,461.The mythology surrounding his life became ingrained in the Irish culture. The most well known legend is how St.Patrick used the native Irish clover to explain the Holy Trinity.

>

> Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. Irish families would dance, eat and drink.

>

> If you have not celebrated St.Patricks Day it is time to start the tradition in your life and family.Late winter, early spring is a good time to break out some new customs, wearing , eating and drinking of the green.

>

> In Sioux Falls,South Dakota each year there is a St.Patricks Day parade and celebration. The Queen of the day and parade carries a bouquet of one dozen long stem potatoes, yes I said potatoes. The entire city celebrates.

>

> This bouquet of one dozen long stem potatoes is one that you can make and share with family and friends. Create one and take it to your favorite Irish establishment of party,or to the kids classroom for a traditional treat.

> Your local flower shop will have everything you will want to create tout St.Patricks Day design.Your florist will help you choose the perfect flowers and stems.

> This design is made by taking twelve stems of flowers. Cut the flowers off of the stem at an angle place the flowers in a vase of their own for a lovely table design.

> Wash 12 small red potatoes. Cut an "X" cut in each with a knife.Gently insert the longer stem into the "X" cut on the red potato . Tie some green and white ribbons at the base of the potato. place some sand or small stones in the vase for stability, insert the stems into the stones, add some foliages at the base, and have some fun celebrating St Patricks Day with a new tradition of your own.Irish eyes will be smiling.

2013 Koehler & Drmm Design Competition and i Program

i is coming to Koehler & Dramm on Tuesday evening, January 29. There will be active booths located around Koehler & Dramm. What the term active booths means that someone will be in all of these designated areas showing products, and how to use them, new design styles and procedures, care and handling procedures, flowers, lots of activity.
We here at K&D know that your time in precious, so we have gathered many professionals in one place to talk to, ask questions, ask them to show you how to do a technique.
We have our Professional and Student Design Competitions. Take a chance, sign up to be a finalist in the Professional Division. There will be 6 finalists judged by professional trained judges. These finalists will compete on the Main Stage at The Minneapolis Home and Garden Show. The winner will b announced at that time.
The Student Design Competition will be judged that evening, the winners announced and awarded their prizes.
Several have e mailed , called and spoken with me to ask which one they are eligible for. If you are a student, then the student. If you own or have worked with flowers for years, sign up for the professional. If you are a professional, but still think you are in the beginning stages, choose. The main thing is to stretch yourself. Put yourself in the category that you will learn the most from, after all that is part of what this is all about...learning.
   Every design is growth.
Another concern is will people know who designed the arrangement. The only person that knows is Cheryl as she receives the entries, gives each a number. From that point on no one knows names or shop names or anything about the designer. After the judging the winners and finalists numbers and names are connected. At no time is a name placed on an entry. If you want any one to know, you will be the one to tell them.
Remember after the competition gather and read your evaluation forms. The judges will write learning comments on the sheets.
   Sign up today.
